Workplaces

As an employer you and your colleagues may not be aware that many of the things you do everyday at work are helping to create child friendly communities and prevent child abuse and neglect. By supporting employees to achieve a balance between work and family commitments and by developing and implementing flexible work practices, your workplace is playing a part.

Having a reputation for being a family friendly workplace may enhance the viability of your business and assist with attracting and retaining quality staff. Research has shown that when an employee's home and family life is stable and supported, business benefits in so many ways. Conversely, a positive workplace provides a sense of cohesiveness for employees, positive social contacts and supports that are then conducive to positive social interactions at home.

Here are some other ideas of how your business can initiate actions, involve all and inspire others to create a child friendly community:

  • Ensure that those in management roles understand the benefits of flexible work practices and have adequate training to enable them to respond to family issues faced by their employees.
  • Hold information seminars in the workplace on parenting and balancing work and family life.
  • Incorporate work and family issues into aims, mission statements and corporate plans to create a family friendly culture in the workplace. This communicates a clear message that when an employees' needs are being met, they in turn, are more able to meet their family's needs.
  • Take into account workers with family commitments when scheduling staff meetings, social gatherings and planning days.
  • Ensure those working in part-time employment are valued equally and have access to training and career development opportunities.
  • Develop a community and business partnership with a non-profit organisation or charity and donate your organization's expertise and skills for a negotiated period of time or to undertake a defined task through a pro-bono arrangement.
