The KiDS CAN criteria has been structured around NAPCAN's children's wellbeing framework, which is modelled on UNCROC - the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child: that children Play a part, live well, are able to reach their potential, and are free from harm. The over-arching objective of KiDS CAN is that KiDS play a part. Here are examples from recipients in 2006 of how KiDS CAN has achieved results in the other three elements of a child friendly community:
This project aimed to increase physical activity levels of all students in participating schools. They developed a model aimed at empowering primary school students to identify barriers to physical activity during break times at school and to plan strategies to overcome these barriers.
This project gave the children adequate equipment to enable them to play safely and sensibly in the playground. Children now have the opportunity to share the playground, using markers to define areas. They are active and sharing resources and playground areas.
At a student council meeting, the students decided that they needed a place for quiet games and recreation. They had a quadrangle with some new plants but needed more. The students wanted the quadrangle to be colourful and full of fun playground activities. The benefits named by the students are a more attractive environment with aboriginal designs and sea designs, fun games to improve their learning e.g. the map of Australia race track, more opportunities for children to have fun with each other and an opportunity for children not interested in ball games and running activities to be involved in fun physical activities. The outcome: "Happy, healthy children - all enjoy the 'look' of the quadrangle."

The Sunnydays Project is an innovative weekly activity program for teenagers with intellectual and physical disabilities attending Cromehurst Special School . The objective of the Sunnydays Project is to teach teenagers with an intellectual disability the skills they need to research, plan and implement a social activity in the community, using transport and facilities generally available in the community.
It proves that, with proper support, our KiDS CAN achieve maximum independence in their social activities in their local community, and learn the skills of friendship.
The Dance Troupe is a project which involves Koori KiDS in progressive way to built up their self-esteem, their skills in dance, and their knowledge of their cultural background. They learn traditional and modern aboriginal dance and promote it to a wide audience. All the while, the regimen of learning to dance is turning out to be fantastic exercise for the kids and increasing their physical, as well as their spiritual wellbeing..

This project is an early intervention and prevention program on sexual assault and domestic violence aimed at year 9, 10 & 11 students. The full day program consists of two interactive workshops on family/domestic violence and sexual assault and then two workshops that consolidate the information by working along side students to write, perform and record a hip-hop song, and develop posters/resources around the issues of Domestic Violence and sexual assault.
The most important aspects of the program are that it recognises the skills, talents and knowledge of young people and actually models respectful relationships between male and female students, teachers and workers.
