NAPCAN developed KiDS CAN to provide a framework to engage, support and resource children and young people so they may actively participate in initiatives which contribute to the development of child friendly communities. This process helps build protective factors that will reduce the risk of them being harmed.
The KiDS CAN grant program has helped a group of Aboriginal girls fulfil their dream to play competitive netball. MORE
The program relies on genuine partnerships with corporate sponsors, government agencies (including local councils), academics and community organisations working together to maximise the reach and effectiveness of the KiDS CAN program into local communities. With the commitment and support of these key stakeholders, the program encourages the participation of all children and young people, with particular emphasis on those who may be vulnerable or at risk.
KiDS CAN encompasses programs and initiatives that:
- Enable children to contribute to others
- Build self esteem through taking responsibility and involvement in decision making
- Model supportive and respectful relationships with adults and the wider community, and
- Draw on children and young peoples' own knowledge and expertise.
Each of these components of KiDS CAN are known factors that enable children to succeed in life.
With the success of KiDS CAN in NSW the program is being realised in other States and Territories, while here in NSW KiDS CAN has forged a new partnership with the University of Western Sydney to develop an evaluation framework in 2008 in order to build an even more effective model of engagement for children and young people.
