Kempsey South Public School Project name - MURRUNG LIVING (Dunghutti - Good Living

Project objective - Our aim is to refine and extend existing school and community activities and programs. This would aim at supporting existing skills and developing a network to enhance resilience by developing capacity building in a sustainable community.

Many students are experiencing health related issues which are linked to an unhealthy lifestyle, poor nutrition and poor hygiene. These factors detract from learning; contribute to absences and increases difficulty to engage students in class. We have identified a need for an intensive health, nutrition and hygiene program, which is currently being implemented. Increasing awareness and knowledge about the affects of childhood obesity and juvenile diabetes.

Our community has limited resources for educating and supporting students for promoting Aboriginal culture in our school and community. We will endeavour to provide opportunities for developing this aspect of our local community/society by introducing the children to greater knowledge and awareness through storytelling and art by modelling from local experts. This will coincide with extensive activities to celebrate 50 years of NAIDOC and 40 year milestone of the referendum to give Indigenous people voting rights.

The fair and safe play playground program will be aimed at enhancing recreational and social skills associated with healthy lifestyle to diminish/reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour that result in time outs and suspensions within the school system. These additional individual skills will hopefully flow into the community and allow children to better utilise free and leisure time before and after school.
